Vision Board Creation: Start With a Plan

A vision board is a visualization tool consisting of graphics, phrases, quotes, and affirmations that represent your goals and dreams for the future.

The simple exercise of curating your hopes and dreams into a visual representation—and looking at it regularly—is thought to allow you to subconsciously engage in the actions required to acheive those goals.

Where to Start

Before starting your vision board, I highly suggest taking my 30 Minute Vision Board Goal Planning E-Course to help you identify your goals and to prioritize your wants and needs. In the course, we will walk through how you can start with four categories that encompass your dreams, goals, and wishes, including but not limited to the following:

  1. Experiences / Travel

  2. Work / School

  3. Dreams / Spiritual / Achievements

  4. Hobbies / Health / Fun

These topics will become the topic headings in your four quadrants, and I’ve provided the following prompts to get you started:

You don’t have to use every single prompt listed above, instead pick 2-3 per quadrant that really speak to you.

When making goals and envisioning what you would like for your future, feel free to go big and lofty with your goals. Just note that research has shown that vision boards don’t just work by putting positive thoughts out into the universe, they need to include plans of action to actually work.

Set SMART Goals

Once you have created a broad list of your wishes and desires, you can further drill down your list to ensure that each desire becomes an actionable goal.

A SMART goal is a goal that is Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.

Some questions to ask before setting SMART goals include:

  • Where does this desire sit in terms of priority?

  • How much time or money does that activity or desire require? (Perhaps this just means something may take longer to achieve.) 

  • What resources are needed?

  • Are there any barriers? ( i.e. Any setbacks or rules to be aware of?)

Answering the above questions may lead you to more steps and even more quesions, but in doing so you can split your tasks into bite-sized goals, and set a date, assign frequency, or specify outcomes in order to know when you have finally achieved your goals. 

Get Creative

The quadrants above allow you to create a blueprint for your goals. Now you can take the time to create a creative and artistic vision board off of those goals, if that’s something that you desire.

Personally, I like to create a digital vision board using beaufiful images that correspond with the goals that I have set for myself. From there I set the vision “board” as my iPhone screensaver and look at it every chance I get.
